What Can I Tow?

Follow the flow chart and check whether you need to take the trailer test. These rules apply if you passed your standard B category driving test after 1st January 1997.

Flowchart to find out if a driver needs the trailer licence

Note: The weights discussed are the plated weights displayed on the vehicle and trailer and not the actual weight of the vehicle or trailer.

MAM-Maximum Authorised Mass or Gross Weight.

Vehicle MAM = Weight which is shown either in the vehicle hand book or on the vehicle VIN plate and includes the vehicle and its load

Trailer MAM = Weight which is shown on the ID plate and includes the trailer and its load

IMPORTANT:-
Remember that driving without the correct licence is against the law and cancels your insurance.

"In a recent prosecution case a driver convicted of towing a trailer without the correct licence was given 6 penalty points on the licence and an £800 fine."
