What You Need to Know Before Hitching Up

Are you dreaming about hitting the road with a caravan in tow or need to transport a trailer for work or leisure?

Towing can open up a world of possibilities, from adventurous camping trips to transporting goods. However, before you start, it's crucial to understand the legal requirements regarding towing in the UK. Whether you need a specific licence depends on several factors, including when you passed your driving test and the combined weight of your vehicle and trailer. Let's break it down, so you're ready to tow safely and legally.

 Towing Licences Explained

- Passed Your Test Before 1 January 1997 Good news! You are generally allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorized mass (MAM). This means the larger trailers are likely within your reach without needing an additional licence.

- Passed Your Test on or after 1 January 1997 You're permitted to drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM towing a trailer up to 3,500kg MAM, The DVLA should have automatically updated your licence record to show this entitlement, allowing you to tow heavier trailers without additional tests.

 Before You Tow

Checking your licence is the first step, but there's more to safe towing than just legal entitlements. Make sure your vehicle is suitable for the caravan or trailer you plan to tow. The exact towing weight or capacity for your vehicle is stamped on the Vehicle Identification Number Plate, VIN Plate. The VIN plate is usually found under the bonnet or on a door pillar, if you struggle to find refer to the vehicle owners handbook as that should reference where it is located for your vehicle.

We also recommend that you familiarise yourself with the towing process, including hooking up the trailer, reversing, and driving safely with a load. This will help you to hit the road with confidence.
