Do I need a course to tow caravan?

From Dec 2021 anyone who has passed their category B car driving licence can now tow up to 3,500kg without taking an additional test. This is a combined weight of 7000kg - 3500kg towing vehicle and 3500kg caravan. You’ll need to know the weight of both your vehicle and caravan - also known as the ‘maximum authorised mass’ (MAM).

See here for details on new towing rules and weight allowances - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/new-rules-for-towing-a-trailer-or-caravan-with-a-car-from-autumn-2021

Currently, caravanners aren't required to sit a towing course. However if you're new to caravanning and want to have a go before you take the plunge, or if you simply want to build your confidence, then the advice would be to attend a caravan towing course.
